From Morehouse to Ralph Lauren: James Jeter’s Inspiring Journey as Creative Director

Written By: CJ Hall

James Jeter is making waves in the fashion world as Ralph Lauren’s first Black creative director, and his journey from Morehouse College to this historic position is nothing short of incredible. James’ appointment as creative director not only marks a significant milestone for the brand but also showcases the ongoing push for diversity in fashion.

Jeter’s story began at Morehouse, where he immersed himself in programs and activities that would later shape his design philosophy. His career kicked off as an intern at Ralph Lauren, starting at just 16 years old while working at the Rugby store in Georgetown, DC. From those early days, he worked his way up the corporate ladder, moving from design associate to lead designer.

One of his notable projects was the Morehouse and Spelman Colleges Collection, launched in 2022, which highlighted the rich legacy of HBCUs.

James Jeter’s career took a major turn after the events of 2020 that highlighted racial issues and sparked conversations about the urgent need for diversity and inclusion, particularly in the fashion industry.

As awareness of systemic racism grew, many brands, including Ralph Lauren, began reassessing their practices. These discussions ultimately led to the creation of the HBCU collection, which not only showcased a commitment to representation but also resonated strongly with a younger audience eager for more inclusive narratives.

Now, as the creative director for Men’s Polo, Jeter is set to breathe new life into the brand. He plans to infuse it with fresh ideas that appeal to a broader and more diverse customer base. His mission is to ensure that Ralph Lauren remains relevant in today’s changing fashion landscape.

Jeter is not just focused on design; he aims to represent the voices and experiences of Black consumers in a way that has been historically overlooked in the industry.
