End of Year Homecoming Recap: Best Concert

Written By: Elainey Bass

As the school year comes to a close, let's all reminisce on our favorite time of the year .. HOMECOMING! The week is filled with so many fun activities, networking opportunities, and newfound memories. But what students get most excited for, is the homecoming concert! Of course HBCUs bring out the hottest artists that students adore. But which institution had their students more hyped up? While there are over 100 HBCUs, three schools caught my attention the most. As a big music head myself, please note that this is solely based on my opinion. This list is in no particular order.

North Carolina A&T State University

Without a doubt, NCAT pulled out all the stops for this year’s concert. Every year they defend their title of “Greatest Homecoming on Earth” and I know that their students thoroughly enjoyed the show. With a lineup of artists like Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Lil Durk, Flo Milli, and Rylo Rodriguez, students got the best of both worlds when it comes to Hip-Hop and R&B. The concert catered to both males and females, and I’m more than certain that the students left the concert satisfied.

Morehouse & Spelman College (Spelhouse)

Every year, both institutions have joint homecoming activities, so you can imagine the budget that’s set in place. Last year, Spelhouse had 21 Savage as the headliner and Drake came out with a surprise performance. With that being said, the expectations were high this year. Their concert lineup featured Lil Durk, Young Nudy, and Veeze. It was also hosted by Fly Guy DC, a well-known host in Atlanta. The host himself is known to bring out a crazy guest set, but this year he may have fallen compared to previous times. This year he brought out Bow Wow, Offset, Rubi Rose, and other upcoming artists.

Florida A&M University

This was another lineup that I feel like catered to all students. You got a little R&B vibe from Mariah the Scientist and Toosii. For the ones that wanted to hear more Hip-Hop, Nardo Wick provided that vibe. I also find it interesting that part of this lineup was done by other schools, but this combination made the most sense to me. Overall, the rattlers seemed pleased with the lineup and enjoyed the show.

Personally, I’m excited to see what the schools have up their sleeve for next school year. New artists emerge on the scene often and performing at HBCUs are a great way to build a fan base. Alabama State University has already announced their line up of Sexyy Red, Rob 49, and Bossman Dlow for next year! Hopefully this means that we will start to hear announcements from other schools soon.
